How to apply for a passport

From the snowy peaks of the Alps to the white sand beaches of Costa Rica, you can't get to any exciting, exotic destinations without first getting that little blue book to freedom, which we hope you eventually fill with stamps!

                                     Here's how:

1. Fill out the Application for Passport, Form DS-11. You can download this form online on the U.S. State Department website (click here) and bring it with you when you apply.

2. Get two passport photos taken. They must be identical 2 x 2 in photos that offer a full, frontal view of your face, from the top of your head to your shoulders. Many post offices, mail box locations, and even some convenience stores take passport photos for a minimal fee. Some Passport Acceptance Facilities take photos on site as well.

3. Bring one of the following to the Passport Acceptance Facility to prove citizenship: previous US passport, a certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or a certificate of citizenship.

4. Bring proof of identity: A current driver's license, or a government or military ID. You can also bring a previous US passport or naturalization certificate.

5. Locate a Passport Acceptance Facility. Use the U.S. Department of State Web (click here) site to find the nearest facility. Simply input the desired zip code and the site will generate a list of acceptance facilities in your area.

6. You must pay a passport port application fee and an execution fee to receive your passport, which you can do when you file your application. It takes approximately six weeks to receive your passport in the mail. If you need it sooner than that, you can pay an additional fee in order to have it expedited. Some facilities are able to issue passport in just 48 hours.

Get to exploring, dolls!
